"A touch of Romania under Otaki sun" - That’s how local media talks about Dragos and Carmen's venture.
La Casa Romana is more than a restaurant: it's an evolution of passion and a desire to maintain the heritage of food, and to live sustainably off the land. And to share that with others. La Casa Romana literally means The Romanian House; a place to feed, nurture, and enjoy. It expresses the passion and love of sharing of its owners, Carmen and Dragos Mihaila, and their two daughters Alisa and Sara. Come for lunch or dinner, or buy from the great range of freshly grown and prepared foods; homemade wine and brandy, dairy products, cheeses, preserves, specialty meats, honey, and seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables. The menu includes wood fire baked pizza and bread, a homemade meal and soup (check our Menu page for more details).
The breads are baked in the mornings with the residual heat from the night before; the flour is stone-ground at the DeMolen windmill in Foxton and the simple and old recipe is brought from Romania. The result is a delicious bread with its own distinctive taste that cannot be achieved otherwise.
